A CATERED BAKE-OFF

Book Cover

The sisters, who are caterers, have been invited to participate in a contest based on the popular Great British Bake Off. The site is a tent on the Kenmore Estate, which has seen better days. Inside and outside are six contestants; two judges; the producer, Sam Levine; and numerous crew for The Longely Bake-Off. Contestants Nell and Lori are caterers, Mike is a cookie shop owner, and Adam is the owner of a pub. The judges are Ellen, host of a local TV cooking show, and Doug, who teaches cooking courses. A practice run-through leads to bickering and Libby’s discovery of a possible poisoned mushroom among the ingredients. Then one of the ovens explodes, scattering shards of glass. Sam, suspecting that this was no accident, calls the police. Everyone’s a bit nervous at the next day’s practice session, but no one’s imagined the tent being overrun by a herd of goats trying to eat everything in sight and finally collapsing the tent before the goatherd and his dogs can remove them. Next, threatening messages arrive in rhymed verse. But all these misfortunes are outdone when the espresso machine explodes on the first day of baking, fatally injuring Doug. The police finally take things seriously, and the show still goes on, but it may be up to the sleuthing sisters and their father, a retired law officer, to find the truth. The biggest clue: Except for the sisters, everyone involved lived in the same town when they were young.
